Preservation and Recognition of Nachhungs/Nokchhos

One of UKROA’s most significant initiatives is the preservation and recognition of Nachhungs/Nokchhos. Also known as Nachnungma/Nokchhoma, Nachhungs hold a vital role in Kirat Rai culture as priests, shamans, and healers. They are deeply revered for their role in rituals, ceremonies, and community events, serving as custodians of sacred Mundum knowledge. In addition to reinforcing cultural values and belief systems, they assist in healing and spiritual guidance, acting as mediators between the earthly and sacred realms. Their expertise also extends to herbal medicine, rituals, and spiritual teachings.

Unfortunately, the Nachhungs are at risk of disappearing, with the remaining practitioners are aged 40 or above. The growing influence of modernity has hindered the emergence of new Nachhungs. If this trend continues, Nachhungs may vanish within the next two decades—taking with them their invaluable knowledge.

Recognizing this urgent need to preserve the role of the Nachhungs, UKROA hosted a felicitation program on February 14th, 2024, to honor Nachhungs and other Kirati elders. A total of 15 Nachhungs and 12 Purkhas (elders) were recognized with clothing, food, and letters of appreciation. The event was led by UKROA NY chapter president Mamata Rai, with Mapya Dudhkosi Municipality chairman Sajjan Rai as the chief guest. Several social workers, cultural activists, and educators spoke on the importance of Nachhungs and Purkhas.

Similarly, on April 28, 2024, UKROA organized a Nokchho felicitation program in Khotehang Municipality, Khotang. The event, coordinated by UKROA legal advisor Suresh Chamling, honored 33 Nachhungs and Purkhas from various villages with financial aid and clothing.
